Most privacy guides for cam sites open with VPNs, which puts the least important thing first. As far as I can tell nobody has ever been identified from a cam site via their IP address. People identify themselves constantly, though, by reusing a username, leaving something recognizable in shot, or working through their own biography one comfortable detail at a time. So this is ordered by what actually leaks rather than by what sounds technical.
Your username
If your cam site handle matches your Reddit account, your gamertag, or anything you have used anywhere public, you are one search away from being connected to it. Username reuse is probably the most common self-inflicted privacy failure on the internet generally, and it costs nothing to avoid.
Make a fresh handle that touches nothing else in your life. Not your name with numbers after it, not the dog, not your city, not the nickname a few friends use. Two unrelated words will do. Dull is the target here.
Pair it with an email address you use for nothing else, which also handles the receipt problem covered in the discreet billing guide.
What you say
Models are extremely good at conversation, which is not sinister, it is the job. It does mean an hour of easy chat can surface your first name, your employer, your city and your weekly schedule without any single question feeling like prying.
She is almost certainly not compiling anything. The reason to be careful is duller than that: typed words go where you cannot follow them, screens get shared, and an account can be watched by more than one person.
Talk freely about opinions, tastes, how your day went in general terms. Keep names, workplace, neighborhood, and anything else that narrows you to one specific person off the table permanently. If the conversation drifts that way, steer it back, and notice if it drifts back again. Someone worth your time will not push. Someone who keeps pushing for personal details has told you something useful about the rest of the conversation, and the scams guide covers what that pattern sometimes leads into.
Your camera
Cam2cam is the best feature on any cam site and the largest exposure on this page, which is an awkward combination.
Before your camera goes live, look at the preview the way a stranger would. Certificates on the wall. Mail on the desk. A team jersey, an unusual view out of the window, photographs on a shelf. Faces are only one part of it. Rooms identify people too, and a room is much harder to notice than a face because you stopped seeing yours years ago.
The fix is a one-off. Find a camera angle with a boring background, ideally a blank wall, and use the same angle every time. Decide up front whether your face is in frame at all. A lot of cam2cam users shoot from the neck down and no model thinks anything of it. The cam2cam setup guide walks through the preview check.
Your connection, a distant fourth
Now the VPN paragraph. A VPN hides your cam site traffic from your internet provider and hides your IP from the platform. If either of those matters in your situation, use one. They are cheap and easy and there is no argument against them.
For most people it is a nice-to-have, and the important part is that it does nothing whatsoever about the three things above it. Somebody running a VPN while reusing his gaming handle is invisible to his ISP and perfectly findable by anyone with a search bar.
Two smaller things while you are here: use a private browser window if the computer is shared, and remember that autofill has a long memory.
The whole list is a fresh username, an email that belongs to nothing else, personal details kept out of chat, a camera angle you checked once, and a VPN if you fancy it. It is an evening's work at most, and it closes every route that has ever really mattered. Nothing on it is a technology problem, which is either reassuring or annoying depending on how much you were hoping to solve this by buying something.
